Are you required to get a channel letter sign for your business? Signage terminology can be confusing to someone who has never ordered a sign before, which is why we are here to help. Resource 4 Signs is a custom sign manufacturing company located in Chatsworth, California. We make custom business signs for the greater Los Angeles area and surrounding areas.

A channel letter sign is essentially a hollow sign letter typically made from metal that has a “channel” inside to hold a light source. Our channel letters are made typically made from aluminum and we use LEDs for illumination. Older sign programs may call out neon lighting, but LEDs are now the standard in signage. Our custom channel letters are made in-house so we can make your custom logo into a 3-dimensional letter sign. Our only physical restrictions are pieces that are too small or letter strokes that are too thin. The returns of the different letters and pieces are hand-bent so some pieces are physically too small to make. The issue with a thin stroke is that even if we can make it, the LEDs may not fit inside.

There are two main types of channel letter signs, front-lit channel letter signs, and reverse-lit channel letter signs. Both styles have solid metal returns, it is the faces and backs that are different. Front-lit channel letters have translucent faces and opaque backs so the faces light up at nighttime. Reverse-lit channel letters have clear backs and opaque faces so the light comes out the back. Reverse-lit channel letters need to be installed spaced off of the wall so the LEDs have room to shine the light around the sign, creating a halo-effect. You can learn more about the different types of front-lit channel letter signs here.

We can also make channel letters that are both front-lit and reverse-lit, which are called compound channel letters.
