This week, we focused on a dimensional letter sign that we made for Let’s Travel in Santa Monica, CA. Dimensional letter signs are great for building signs that don’t need to be illuminated. Dimensional letters are flat-cut letters that can be made from different materials. The two most common materials we use are acrylic and aluminum.
Acrylic is very versatile so it’s one of our top choices for signs. Acrylic comes in many different standard colors so if a customer isn’t looking for a special color, we just need to choose a thickness. Acrylic comes in many thicknesses that range from 1/8″ to 1 1/2″. Due to building signs being larger, we usually go for 1/2″ thick acrylic when creating exterior dimensional letters. If a customer is looking for a specific color, we can just paint it.
If a client is looking for a metallic look, we go with aluminum. Aluminum is lightweight and easy to work with so most of our metal signs are aluminum. Again, aluminum Comes in different thicknesses. Aluminum is a little more sturdy compared to acrylic so it doesn’t have to be as thick, but we still want to make sure that it can withstand the weather.
We can also paint aluminum, but most people will opt for acrylic unless there is a specific reason they want metal. Most people are looking for brushed aluminum letters which look great with many different exteriors and are very popular amongst professional businesses. We can also anodize aluminum which can be expensive, but if you have a large budget for your sign, the end result looks great. We can anodize the aluminum letters in different colors, or anodize them clear. Anodizing aluminum makes the material harder, more durable, and less likely to corrode.
