Brushed aluminum is a very popular material for signage, especially for offices. Brushed aluminum signs work with most interiors, and aluminum itself is a very versatile material. We made a new lobby sign for Richardson Ober DeNichilo using a brushed aluminum backer panel and brushed aluminum dimensional letters. The square backer is made from 1/4″ thick brushed aluminum and the letters are made from 3/8″ thick brushed aluminum. We used a horizontal brushed grain because the letters are meant to be read from left to right. If the characters are meant to be read from left to right or right to left, a horizontal brushed grain should be used because it goes with the direction the eyes move. If the characters are read up and down, we use a vertical brushed grain. The entire sign was mounted using studs and silicone. “R”, “O”, “D”, and the lines were mounted through the square panel.
Aside from brushed aluminum, there is also polished aluminum and painted aluminum. Polished aluminum is mirror-like and very reflective. Aluminum can also be painted in any color. Depending on your logo, you could do all brushed aluminum, all polished aluminum, all painted aluminum, or even a combination of two or three. It really depends on your logo design and what you want the sign to look like. Some logos may not look right if everything is just one tone. This is why we have an in-house designer to review logos and make any necessary adjustments before it is made into a sign.
